This beautiful Ethiopian Opal necklace is a dainty rectangular stone set in sterling silver with a sterling twisted chain. The trademark sparkle in opal is evident in this stone and covers the entire stone and is free of any visible inclusions. It is a clear pale yellow with red and green highlights in the light play. It is a remarkable piece suitable for every day and for dressy occasions.
Ethiopian Welo Opal is found in the mountainous region of northern Ethiopia in the Wollo Province. Ethiopian opals are top crystal material that has a high transparency and thought to be one of the finest opals in the world. Those with red flashes are the most rare and thus the most valuable and this stone has that red flash. Most opals develop slowly in fine pressurized layers of rock but the Ethiopian Opal forms in volcanic rock.
Opals derived its name from the Roman word "Opalus" meaning changing color. It has been rare and very valuable throughout antiquity. It was prized by royals over the centuries and is truly a timeless treasure.
Opal is the October birthstone and 14th Wedding Anniversary gemstone.
The stone was made by the God of Creation and the pendant was made by Travel Ore Designs Artist, Mark Nelson in our Colorado studio.
As does all of our jewelry, it comes with a beautiful gift box and can have matching pieces made by special order as long as supplies last.
